Small hassles and extra steps can sharply reduce action.
More quotesAlcohol did something subtler than turn sensible people into reckless idiots. It narrowed the field of attention. With the risk outside that field, drinkers leaned towards temptation. Put the danger on their hand and narrow attention could favour caution instead. Limited attention becomes a loudhailer for whatever manages to remain visible.
Most serious messages meet us in similarly shabby mental weather: tired, rushed, frightened, excited, three drinks in or one deadline behind. Yet companies write for a calm philosopher sitting upright beneath a reading lamp. The fraud warning lives in yesterday’s email. The true subscription cost hides behind the confirm button. The equipment warning gets a tasteful paragraph on page 47, miles from the control that can remove a finger.
Then everyone acts surprised when the communication “failed to land”. It landed perfectly. It landed nowhere near the decision. Put the essential fact where the hand moves. Strip away competing language. Insert a pause before actions with serious or irreversible consequences. A midnight message may need a delay more than tomorrow’s lecture on judgement.
Companies already know when customers are vulnerable—urgent transfers, angry cancellations, late-night spending. Designs that exploit that state deserve a less flattering name than conversion optimisation. It is grubby engineering. Good communication survives the mind people actually have in the moment. Compliance documents can keep their imaginary philosopher.
