More quotesYour brand lives in other people’s sentences, which is awkward because the brand team cannot approve them. A restaurant discovers its brand when someone asks, “Would you trust it with Mum’s birthday?” Software discovers its brand in the story told after the system breaks at 4.55pm. An employer discovers its brand when rejected candidates compare how they were treated.
The logo is in none of those conversations. The logo can have the afternoon off.
Product, price, support and leadership keep supplying the plot. Marketing is then asked to repaint the reputation while Operations continues setting fire to the kitchen. A new typeface may improve the menu. It will struggle with the smoke.
Listen for the sentences customers volunteer. Which warning gets passed between friends? Which praise survives without prompting? A promise works when it compresses experienced truth into memorable words. With no truth beneath it, the promise is just an instruction customers are free to ignore. Companies own assets. They can buy campaigns, colours and an enormous illuminated sign. Final meaning belongs to the person describing them after they have left. You cannot repossess that sentence. You have to earn a better one.
