Small hassles and extra steps can sharply reduce action.
More quotesEmerson pushed. His son pulled. The calf, displaying a disappointing lack of respect for literature, stayed exactly where it was.
The housemaid offered something the calf wanted and movement followed.
Most persuasion is Emerson with better vocabulary. The seller describes why the sale matters to the seller. The change programme explains why leadership wants change. The product forces a tour of features before allowing the customer to perform the task that brought them there. When resistance appears, somebody proposes a louder explanation.
The calf is then labelled difficult.
Resistance usually contains a rational clue. The current behaviour may avoid risk, save effort, protect status or deliver a reward the proposed alternative ignores. Some objections remain wrong. Pushing against them without understanding still wastes energy and teaches the other side to push back.
Starting from their point of view has a grubby reputation because manipulators also do it. A con works by understanding desire extremely well. Empathy is a method of perception, never a certificate of virtue. The ethical difference lies in whether the new action creates real value for the person or merely uses their motive against them.
Sometimes every possible move disappoints somebody. A necessary rule may remain inconvenient. A product may be wrong for the buyer. Honest persuasion allows those conclusions instead of treating every refusal as an objection awaiting technique.
The housemaid got the calf into the barn. History records rather less about whether the calf considered this an excellent outcome.
