Easy-to-process things feel truer, safer, and more appealing.
More quotesThe coin stayed worth twenty-five cents. The story did not. Markets are full of objects whose atoms contribute less than their biography.
Ownership, origin and association can create value that no scale finds. A guitar used by a musician carries a different experience from the same model on a shop wall. A recipe’s history can deepen the pleasure of eating it. A consultant’s familiar framework gains meaning when joined to hard-earned knowledge of the client’s kind of problem. Even the battered notebook from a successful project can matter more than a pristine replacement because the marks are part of what is being kept.
Marketers often reach for another feature because features sit obediently in a comparison table. Meaning is a less house-trained animal. Better to ask what truthful context already exists: who made this, where has it travelled, what does ownership express, why does this particular example matter? A repair mark, maker’s signature or documented former use can outperform another coating nobody requested. Provenance changes the thing people believe they are buying, whether the factory likes that sentence or not.
Inventing that story is fraud with nicer adjectives. Discovering and communicating a real one is value creation. Preserve evidence, name uncertainty and resist polishing every rough edge into legend.
The coin remains twenty-five cents. The buyer is paying for the bit no mint can stamp.
