Better solutions sometimes appear when we stop pushing through the obvious route.
More quotesTalent is the glamorous explanation because it lets everybody skip the boring footage. The Beatles arrive in America; history presses play; genius pours out. Hamburg, the brutal hours and roughly 1,200 performances are left on the cutting-room floor.
But hours alone are another lazy fairy tale. Repeating the same weak move for ten years gives you a decade-old weak move. What matters here is adventurous practice: performance, feedback, adjustment, another performance. A salesperson can make five hundred calls while protecting the same bad question, or review ten calls and change it. A developer can ship code for years while dodging criticism, or improve quickly because every review exposes a fresh assumption. A designer can produce thirty variations that decorate one idea, or make each version test a different decision.
Organisations love “natural talent” because it excuses them from designing conditions for growth. They hire for polish, underinvest in rehearsal, then marvel when the already-confident keep winning. Better to ask what kind of repetition improves the skill, where honest feedback enters, and whether the work contains enough consequence to teach. Talent may alter the starting line. It does not abolish the track. The unsexy advantage is practice with its eyes open.
