Expectations change how the same experience feels.
More quotesIn the experiment, students completed more of the Sudoku and word-search tasks when they worked sequentially. Forced switching produced the lowest scores. Each switch requires the person to recover context: where they stopped, which assumption mattered and what had already been ruled out. The cost can be brief enough to overlook while recurring often enough to reduce an afternoon’s output. Five open documents and several active conversations therefore provide weak evidence that useful work is advancing.
Some roles require live response, and simple activities can coexist without much damage. The expensive combination is two tasks that both depend on judgement, working memory and continuity. The interruption is visible; the time spent reconstructing the abandoned problem usually is not. A workable response separates shallow responsive work from periods devoted to one demanding activity. Genuine urgency needs an agreed signal so routine notifications do not claim the same priority. Progress can then be judged by completed units of work instead of visible motion. At 5pm, the five documents may still be open and the conversations may still be active. The customer is waiting for one of them to be finished, and the deadline has not moved. By the following morning, the customer is still waiting.
